R1 vs FZ1 Yamaha R1 Forum: YZF-R1 Forum

  1. R1 is a little faster because of lighter weight and a few more horsepower. FZ1 is a little more comfortable because of ergonomics. R1 handles quicker because of geometry but FZ1 is more stable, especially with wider bars. For two up FZ1 is much better for passenger

I bought an '03 R1 and am extremely happy with it, but will definitely miss the FZ1 on long distance rides. Not quite as much power as an R1, and heavier, but still handles well and goes like crazy

  1. All the R1 forks need their matching calipers. They are radially mounted, the bolts go straight through them from top to bottom vs going through the sides on the two leg bracket setup like on the FZ1. If I was running the 04-06 forks and calipers, I would not bother with the R1 MC as the FZ1 is setup to handle 4 piston calipers already

  3. The R1 is a sweet bike but certainly not a tourer! Have you tried the FZ1? I know that John seems quite happy to have traded his FJR for an FZ1 and certainly the FZ1 has to be a lot more comfortable than the R1! And isn't the FZ1 powered by a de-tuned R1 engine? Surely with a bit of tuning you could turn an FZ1 into a real rocket

They have tubular steel frames and modified YZF-R1 engines which are carbureted. The models were virtually unchanged over this period, except for colour options, the introduction of the FZS1000S which had a black engine, and in some European countries the 2005 models were fitted with rudimentary.

The FZ1's engine was lifted from the 2006 YZF-R1 and tuned for torque. This entailed reshaped cams, altered valve timing and an extra 5 lbs. added to the crankshaft for smoother throttle. The FZ1 a cutting edge sport bike with a twist My decision about the FZ1 or FJR was easy. Went to the Yahama shop in April 2003 to buy one of the two. They had a silver 03 and the yellow 03 FZ1's. Tried the silver FZ1 out as my '84 Gpz 750 is silver. Asked about the FJR and how they would fit my 6'4 frame. Lots of head scratching from the dealer. Asked if they had ever seen person, got one. I rode them both and found the FZ1 to be old school, top heavy in feel and it did not handle as well as the 919 did FOR ME. They are both fun, the 919 was more fun for me. If I wanted a sport touring bike, the FZ1 would of won out. Yes, the FZ1 is probably a better all around bike. I found it boring and way too crude As with the original Fazer 1000, which shoe-horned an early, carb'd R1 motor into a pretty basic steel tube frame, the recipe for the new model is a simple one: stick a re/detuned R1 motor in a modern but less sport-focused chassis, dumb down the suspension a touch, bolt some sensible bars on and add a practical yet sporty half fairing 'Large increases in cost with questionable increases in performance can be tolerated only for racehorses and fancy women,' wrote 19th-century physicist William T, Lord Kelvin. It is a rocket that can hang with and beat many Gxsr and R1 riders, yet it also has a soft seat and slightly upright riding position that takes the weight off your back and wrists on long rides The FZ-10's engine is a real gem on the street. In the dyno analysis, the FZ makes 25 fewer horses than the R1, but at 9900 rpm instead of 12,300. And the FZ makes 5 more lb-ft of torque at 9300 rpm instead of the R1's 8900 torque peak. Almost like if Ford greatly improved the V6 Mustang and left the V8 to sit a year or two. There are still merits to the FZ1 but personally with the price and feature list on the FZ09 its a pretty sound bet as for the bikes the OP is considering, I would go with the FZ1. I think the ergos are more comfortable on it than the FZ8, but that is entirely sujective, of course. The white FZ1 with Givi hard bags is gorgeous, IMO.
